Isolated from the mainland, Con Dao islands are one of Vietnam's star attractions. Long the preserve of political prisoners and undesirables, they now turn heads thanks to their striking natural beauty. Con Son, the largest of this chain of 15 islands and islets, is ringed with lovely beaches, coral reefs and scenic bays, and remains partially covered in tropical forests. In addition to hiking, diving and exploring deserted coastal roads there are excellent wildlife-watching opportunities, such as the black giant squirrel and endemic bow-fingered gecko.

Lovely hotel

This is a brand new hotel in Con Dao, and it's a great place to stay. Firstly - the staff were amazing - they really were exceptional and so professional, knowledgeable and friendly. I was so impressed! Secondly, the food is REALLY good (surprisingly so!). They have 3/4 restaurants and the burger at the poolside restaurant was honestly one of the best I've ever had! Also, the tapas food at the sunlounge restaurant is incredibly tasty, and good portion sizes too! The pool area is beautiful - you look out over the sea and a quiet road. There's a small and functional gym with good air con too! You can hire a motorbike cheaply from the hotel and travel easily to the pretty beaches and other areas. Also, there are 2 good western restaurants nearby (Infiniti and Villa Maison) if you want to eat out - only 5 mins walk to each.
