Motorbike Taxi - You can easily spot a motorbike taxi driver around every corner in Vietnam wearing a blue shirt. You might already know that the motorbike is the most popular means of transportation in Vietnam, and you would love to have this experience at least once, but you don’t know how to ride one. Don’t get upset yet because you can always choose to go on a motorbike trip by booking with a tour agency or you can go around the corner of any streets to take a motorbike taxi - or “xe om.” Motorbike taxi will be a good choice because you can get connected with the local friendly drivers; they will share with you many advice and experience. However, getting a motorbike taxi can be difficult if the drivers cannot communicate well in the foreign language. On the other hand, booking with a reliable tour operator, you will have the experience of their professional services such as professionally trained local tour guides and using standard safety tested helmets. Either way, you will surely get to enjoy a ride around streets in Vietnam.

Taxis are a reasonable means of transportation in Vietnam, and you can find it at most major sites. Chances are, if hotels or other businesses call a taxi for you, it will be a little bit more expensive than its original price since the businesses get a kickback. Therefore, if you are traveling on a budget, you should try to flag one on your own. 

Taxis with meters are cheap by international standards and an almost safe way to travel around at night. The average tariffs are from 12,000 to 15,000 VND per kilometer. You should only go with recommended or reputable taxi companies. There are some nationwide taxi companies with good reputations, which are Mai Linh, Vinasun, etc.

Some app-based taxis (served with both motorbike and car) including Grab, GoViet, and Be are available in some big Vietnamese cities including Hanoi, Saigon, Danang.

GrabCar are the best alternatives to using metered taxis in Vietnam via the app. GrabCar is widely used in South East Asia whereas Uber is popular around the world. There's also GrabBike if you want to experience the roads of Vietnam but aren’t brave enough to drive yourself. It's much quicker and cheaper than using the car but be prepared to feel the chaos, especially during rush hour. Expect to pay no more than a few dollars to get around the city, GrabBikes are cheaper.

You’ll need to get a SIM card with an Internet package to use these services in Vietnam before downloading the respective app. SIM Cards are cheap and are worth it for the money saved in getting around the city compared to relying on metered taxis. The routes are fixed and you need to rate the driver on their honesty and driving skills giving an incentive to drive safely.
