Weather Update: Typhoon Fengshen Weakens – Heavy Rains Continue Across Central Vietnam

Typhoon Fengshen brings heavy rain to Central Vietnam – Da Nang and Hoi An under dark clouds

What’s Happening in Central Vietnam

As of this morning, Typhoon Fengshen has officially weakened into a tropical depression after making landfall between Da Nang and Quang Nam (Hoi An).
While the winds have subsided,
the system is now bringing widespread and prolonged rainfall across Central Vietnam — creating high risks of flooding, landslides, and travel disruptions over the next few days.

According to Vietnam’s National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasting, rainfall may continue until October 24–25, particularly in coastal and mountainous regions. This extended rain could trigger landslides in hilly areas and flooding along rivers and lowlands.

Affected Areas – Provinces Under Heavy Rainfall

Affected Areas – Provinces Under Heavy Rainfall

The following provinces are expected to experience continuous rain, road blockages, and localized flooding:

  • Quang Nam (including Hoi An, Tam Ky)
  • Da Nang City
  • Thua Thien Hue
  • Quang Tri
  • Quang Binh (Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park area)

🌧️ Travelers currently in these regions should stay alert, follow official weather updates, and avoid unnecessary travel in the coming 2–3 days.

Main Hazards – Floods and Landslides

Main Hazards – Floods and Landslides

The main weather threats from Fengshen’s remnants are:

  • Flooding in lowlands and riversides:
Heavy rain is causing rivers to rise rapidly, especially in areas near Hoi An, Hue, and Phong Nha. Localized flash floods are possible in rural and suburban zones.
  • Landslides in mountain areas:
Roads connecting Hue – A Luoi, Phong Nha – Khe Sanh, and Ho Chi Minh Trail sections may be affected by falling rocks or soil erosion.
  • Transportation delays:
Several bus and train routes might face
temporary suspensions, while local flights could be delayed due to strong winds or poor visibility.
  • Power or water interruptions:
Some areas might experience short-term electricity or water cuts during heavy storms.
Traveler Safety Tips – Stay Dry, Stay Smart

Traveler Safety Tips – Stay Dry, Stay Smart

If you are traveling in Central Vietnam, please take the following precautions to ensure your safety:

✅ Before Moving:

  • Check updated weather conditions via Google Weather, Windy, or official Vietnamese news portals like VNExpress or Vietnam News.
  • Reconfirm all transport bookings (buses, trains, domestic flights) before departure.
  • Contact your tour operator to verify if excursions (especially outdoor ones) are running safely.

✅ During the Storm:

  • Avoid riversides, bridges, and low-lying areas.
  • Stay on higher ground or move to safer accommodation if flooding is reported nearby.
  • Keep emergency items ready:
  • Drinking water
  • Energy snacks
  • Power bank
  • Flashlight
  • First aid kit

✅ For Trekking or Outdoor Tours:

  • Postpone activities like trekking, caving, and waterfall tours until conditions improve.
  • In areas like Phong Nha, Bach Ma, Ba Na Hills, trails may be slippery or closed for safety reasons.
  • Always follow local guides’ advice and do not attempt to cross flooded roads.

Transport & Tour Updates (as of October 22)

Transport & Tour Updates (as of October 22)
  • Da Nang Airport (DAD): Operating with some delays; check flight status before heading out.
  • Hoi An Ancient Town: Experiencing light flooding in low-lying streets near the riverside; night markets temporarily closed.
  • Hue – Quang Tri route: Some bus services suspended due to heavy rain.
  • Phong Nha caves: Temporarily closed to visitors for safety inspections.

💬 Friends Travel Vietnam  teams are monitoring the situation 24/7 and helping guests adjust itineraries safely.

Where to Go Instead – Safe & Sunny Alternatives

If you wish to continue exploring Vietnam during this period, consider heading south to areas with stable, dry weather:

  • 🏖️ Nha Trang: Blue skies and calm beaches.
  • 🌸 Da Lat: Cool mountain air, flower gardens, and lakes.
  • 🏄 Mui Ne: Ideal for kite surfing and beach relaxation.
  • 🌆 Ho Chi Minh City: Cultural landmarks, street food, and nightlife unaffected by the storm.
  • 🏝️ Phu Quoc Island: Clear skies and calm seas make it perfect for snorkeling and relaxation.

Each of these destinations currently reports clear to partly cloudy conditions, making them great options for flexible travelers.

When Will Central Vietnam Be Safe Again?

When Will Central Vietnam Be Safe Again?

Based on current forecasts, rainfall should ease by late October 25, with gradual clearing from south to north.
Once the system weakens completely, tourism activities in
Hoi An, Hue, and Phong Nha will resume normally — usually within 2–3 days after major rain events.

📅 Travelers planning upcoming visits in late October or early November can expect cooler temperatures, greener landscapes, and fewer crowds — perfect for photography and cultural exploration once the weather stabilizes.

Final Thoughts – Vietnam Awaits After the Storm

Typhoon Fengshen may have brought rain, but it won’t wash away the warmth and beauty of Central Vietnam.
When the skies clear,
Hoi An’s lantern-lit streets, Hue’s royal citadel, and Phong Nha’s majestic caves will once again welcome travelers from around the world.

Until then:
