The region as also known as “the Tonkinese Alps”, Sapa is just a lovely hill station town in Northern Vietnam near the Chinese border.
Enjoy a very warm welcome from our local (Hmong or Red Dzao) tour guide who will guide you through this stunning piece of Vietnam. From the lush terraced rice paddies to the rustic charm of the native dwellings, Sapa is a place you’re sure to fall in love with! Many diverse groups like the Dzay, Dzao, Tay, Xa Pho or Hmong populate this richly cultural northern territory.
You’ll sample their unique delights as you pass through each village, trek 2 days and overnight with the local Hmong minority family in an homestay, enjoy cooking with locals & lovely 30 min herbal foot massage.
We hope you are ready for our non-touristic trekking.

The following experiences suggestions for the packing list are based on our and feedback from our past travellers. Our packing list should be used as a guide only and is not intended to be a complete packing list. Any other items that you wish to pack are at your own discretion; Most travellers carry their luggage in a day backpack, though an overnight bag with a shoulder strap would be fine if you travel lightly. Smaller bags or backpacks with wheels are NOT convenient to.
Bagpack: You will also need a daypack/bag to carry water and a camera etc and personal stuff.
Walking or Hiking: Comfortable walking shoes with good grip/profile, Sandals/flip-flops (for evening), Hiking poles/walking sticks, Trekking socks
Sightseeing: Binoculars, Camera equipment, Film or memory cards, Spare batteries/charger, Dust proof camera bag
Personal items: Toiletries, Rubber flip-flops for showers, Small sewing kit & safety pins
Winter or Extreme Weather: Thermal underwear or base layers, Beanie/woolly hat/balaclava, Gloves / Hand warmers
Wet Weather:Raincoat, Small Umbrella, Waterproof bags for rain protection while walking, waterproof & windproof jacket, Waterproof trousers
Personal Health: First aid kit, Personal medication/prescriptions, Prescription glasses, Contact lenses and solution High protection sunscreen (25+), Lip balm/lip salve, Hat/wide brim hat, Sunglasses, Insect repellent, Antihistamine/insect bite cream, Antibacterial gel/wipes, Travel sickness tablets, Travel vaccination certificates, After-sun moisturizer, Anti-malaria pills (if recommended by doctor), Aspirin and/or paracetamol, Dehydration powder (salts & glucose), Anti-diarrhea pills (consult your doctor for more detailed advice)
Luggage: On the vast majority of our trips you are expected to carry your own luggage also during the trekking.
- Remember to bring a plastic bag for dirty clothes.
This is at your discretion and we must stress that tips do not form part of the wages of your guide, porter or trek crew, although with the influx of tourism and also different nationalities in tipping cultures, tip is increasingly becoming expected in one way as an incentive, therefore we would like to be a light in the dark after getting many questions about this.
Thankfully, Vietnamese people are as a rule incredibly cheerful and friendly and nothing ever seems too much trouble for them. Your guide and trek crew will be no exception and as a tip is the accepted form of saying ‘thank you’ if you have received good service, a tip at the end of your trek will be greatly and genuinely appreciated. However giving a tip might be struggle also, as in the Vietnamese culture you might see that the person you would like to refuses this, as showing there form of respect not to be greed, where you should resist that it will be accepted and giving it gentle or putting it in someone’s pocket en then walk away and ignore it what just happened, a nice challenge!
The following amounts are per person, suggestions are based on local considerations and feedback for a 2 days & 1 night trek from our past travellers, for tipping your guide, porter or trek crew: 50.000VND to 100.000VND per person similar to 2,50$ to 5$USD
What to know about the ethnic minorities
Increase of tourism, created growing number of tourists who visit the ethnic minorities and evolving trend of commerce in the areas where the ethnic resident live, but also gives an opportunity for very poor inhabitants to earn money. Residents in these areas very quickly grasped the elements of a simple business. They offer their handmade accessories, clothing, bags etc. helping hand with trekking all-in return to earn a bit to support their families, something we need to accept and respect. By buying some local handmade souviniers you are really supporting the local minorities.
Rules to follow in a village of ethnic minorities
During your travel and trekking in mountain areas you will meet people from ethnic minorities in their villages. It is recommended to follow these rules of behavior:
1. Do not use drugs – use or sale of drugs is illegal in Vietnam
2. Do not touch the sacred objects
3. Dress appropriately (long pants preferable, dresses…)
4. Do not drink alcohol in the village and do not be noisy (you can drink the rice wine in their presence)
5. It is not recommended to kiss in public in the village
6. Be careful when taking pictures (especially the elderly and children, ask for permission and then show the photo)
7. Enter into their home only when you are invited (you can also bring a small gift – eg. fruit and balloons for children)
8. Do not give money and sweets to small children (it is better to give some small items, toys…)
9. You can purchase a handmade object for their hospitality
10. If you got the helped hand during your trekking as support during the day, purchase a handmade object for their help, what might cause that more locals who joined that day also would like that you will buy something from them. Good luck and keep in mind that every dime spend is really going to support the local minorities families.
