A home’s kitchen is not just a room, it’s the very heart and soul of a home. Without a kitchen a home isn’t a home, it’s just a house, a space waiting to be filled with laughter, chatter, and happiness. At Friends Travel Vietnam we have the laughter, the chatter, and happiness in abundance. Our kitchen is a little small however…
That’s why we decided to start our own cooking class, an authentic culinary experience - to throw open the doors of our hearts and souls and share with you the joy and wonder of Hanoi’s and Vietnam’s delicious dishes. In the traditional Vietnamese culture eating is so much more than simply taking nourishment or even enjoying a good meal. It’s the cornerstone of the Vietnamese society and traditions, and such an important aspect that the kitchen even has its own god, Tho Cong, who needs to be honoured.
It is with this in mind that we invite you, not only to join our cooking class, but also join our family of dedicated staff as we take you on a journey of traditional Vietnamese Cuisine. The Vietnamese cuisine has quickly become one of the most popular food traditions in the world. The true brilliance of this cuisine lies in its simplicity. Take Bun Cha for example: Grilled pork combines with fresh vegetables and thin noodles in a sweet dipping sauce to create something remarkable. Each element on its own is good, but together they are amazing. It’s this simplicity that we aim to recreate, by ensuring the small and seemingly insignificant things are done well, and through that creating an extraordinary experience.
But why a cooking class, you may ask. Simple, if you want to understand a culture, spent time with its people around a chopping board and a dining table. Discovering a country’s culinary traditions is a shortcut into how they think, act, and operate. It’s exactly these insights that we want to share with you, together with the delicious and authentic dishes, of course. We also understand that a cooking class is a souvenir unlike any other. Unlike the trinket or curiosity that you bought in a busy marketplace and are now not completely sure what to do with... A cooking class is a skill that you are able to take away with you, a memory that you are able to relive every time that you sit down at a dining table. This confidence in the kitchen is exactly the product that we strive to give each of our guests, no matter what your level of cooking experience is. Whether you are young or old, a skilled cook or an amateur just starting out, this authentic culinary experience will have something for you.
This is also why The Real Hanoi Cooking Class is a fully immersive experience, one in which you’ll be doing the cooking, and not just watching as our Chef demonstrates.
When signing up for "The Real Hanoi Cooking Class Experience"this is what you can expect:
We also pride ourselves that we are able to provide something for all our guests, whether you are a professional chef, a stay at home cook or someone who just recently discovered the joys of cooking. To ensure quality and personal attention to detail we specialise in small groups so be sure to inquire about availability to avoid disappointment.
Excellence, we promise excellence. Friends Travel Vietnam is already an established name among professional chefs the world over, having built a reputation on the food-centric Vietnamese tours that we provide. We’ve also worked in close partnership with the Dutch television program 24 Kitchen, an experience that we found extremely enriching.
Our kitchen is situated on the roof of Hanoi’s Sunflower Homestay - a beautiful modern villa in the tranquil Tay Ho district of Hanoi. The kitchen is state of the art and located in an airconditioned conservatory on the roof, so come rain or shine, the class will continue. Next to the conservatory is our rooftop garden, where you’ll find some of the herbs and veggies that we’ll be using in our dishes. You won’t find them fresher than this! The last feature of our exclusive location is a sundeck, offering a stunning 270 degrees view of Tay Ho lake, the perfect view to accompany your meal and a glass of wine. (possible to serve to consider rice wine special soft??)
Our Cooking Class
We start by picking you up from Friends Travel Vietnam office (62 Hang Buom Street) in the Old Quarter this we’ll depart for Hanoi’s Sunflower Homestay where we’ll make our way to the Rooftop Garden where our professional kitchen and expert local Vietnamese Chef will be waiting for us. Time drive + spend 15min
Now it’s time to don your aprons as we enjoy a welcome drink while Chef Truong explains the philosophy and influence of Taoism behind the Vietnamese cuisine. Once we are all delightfully refreshed and informed we start with our first of five dishes. At this point, a grill-master will also be appointed to make sure that the pork patties and pieces of pork belly are grilled to perfection. This is not a task to be taken lightly, as you’ll be holding the success of the Bun Cha dish in your hands, and you do not want to disappoint Chef Truong.
After finishing the five dishes it’s time for us to move to the Sundeck where we can take in the amazing view of Tay Ho lake while eating delicious food and chatting with good friends - exactly how Vietnamese food was meant to be enjoyed. Be sure to ask our chef and guide any questions you still have, we really want to share all of the wonders of this food tradition with you! After all of the merriment it’s time to receive your certificate of completion, a little memento of an unforgettable experience!

Start Cooking, Good Looking!
Enough talking from us, now it’s time to see whether you can stand the heat of the kitchen! We will, however, give you a quick overview of the dishes you’ll be cooking and enjoying.
- 3 Different types of Vietnamese dipping sauces - These provide balance to the rest of our dishes and are an integral part of Vietnamese cooking!
- Fresh Spring Rolls - An absolute staple of Vietnamese cuisine, and arguably the first thing that “springs” to mind when someone mentions Vietnamese food.
- Green Papaya Salad - The truth is, the more authentic Vietnamese version of this recipe is centered around Banana Blossom (Flower) rather than Green papaya. We changed it to green papaya, because it’s an ingredient more readily available in most of our guests’ country of origin.
- Fried Spring Rolls, or Nem Rán - This is a Hanoi speciality! No one knows how to fry a spring roll to perfection better than a traue Hanoian! And of course, you, as soon as we teach you!
- Pho Bo - The ultimate Vietnamese dish! We’ll guide you through this dish, that’s been called “Vietnam in a Bowl”, and help you understand it’s underlying subtleties. Just a heads up, the stock takes some time to perfect, so we’ll be using stock that’s been prepared in the cooking class prior to this for the actual tasting of the dish, but we’ll still walk you through all the steps of preparing this delicious clear fluid!
- Bun Cha - There is absolutely no way we could design a menu and leave off this delicious Hanoian speciality. The rest of Vietnam has a similar dish called Bún Thįt Nướng, but it’s just not the same. If you’ve never had this dish before, your taste buds are in for a treat!
- Clay Pots - We’ll prepare 3 different styles of clay pots, one with pork belly, another with tofu and thirdly one with aubergine and minced pork. This cooking technique is a staple of Northern Vietnam’s mountainous areas and provides a hearty alternative to the rest of Vietnam’s cuisine.
- Dessert - In Vietnamese cuisine dessert is all about saying goodbye. As such we’ll guide you through the staples of ending of a Vietnamese feast, by giving you the background and customs of drinking traditional Vietnamese tea, Rice Wine, and nibbling on some delicious fruits and spicy-salt, a true Vietnamese speciality!
It’s Lunch or Dinner Time!
Eat Your Feast! I mean, what was all your hard work for if not for this moment where you get to enjoy the fruits of your labour, by sitting down for dinner on our rooftop terrace!
We regret that it’s now time to say goodbye. Greet your chef and tour guide and maybe take a last look at the view, before travelling back to the Friends Travel Vietnam offices at 62 Hang Buom Street.
